The beauty and the richness of the heritage and culture of Thailand are undeniable. But one of the nicest parts about travelling in this gorgeous country is that you get to eat Thai food every day!

The cuisine of Thailand is a wide and varied one – the range of Thai food is truly incredible. Generally, a Thai meal will feature soup, something fried, such as ginger fish, a salad called yam, which is served hot, and a dish with gravy and meat and vegetables. And a choice of sauces makes the meal even more interesting. Food is generally shared at a table, with plenty of options for everyone. Rice, noodles, fiery gravies – food that simply melts in the mouth…

Fresh ingredients are a key element of Thai food. Common ingredients include bamboo shoots, leafy vegetables, different kinds of meat, coconut, and of course, a whole lot of spices. Thai food is extremely spicy, with the generous use of both green and red chilies. Seafood is a popular ingredient, and dishes such as Tom Yam Kung or spicy shrimp soup of the ‘fruit of the sea’. The distinct flavor of lemongrass is a feature of many Thai preparations. The most popular Thai dishes include satay, a kind of grilled chicken, pad Thai or noodles, Kaeng Khiao Wan Kai which is a Green Chicken Curry, Kaeng Phet Pet Yang or a delicious Roast Duck Curry and Yam Nua, a lip smacking spicy beef salad. You’ll discover your own favorites!

Thai desserts are delicious, too. Some favorites are Thong Yip – a sweet egg yolk cup, Bua Loi – sticky rice balls with cream of coconut, Sanghkaya or egg custard and Luk Chup, a colorful sweet made of moong bean flour. An enormous variety of fresh fruits is available easily in this tropical paradise, and the fruit is really cheap, too.

If you haven’t tasted Thai food yet, there’s a pleasure in store for you when you travel there, because Thai food is simply scrumptious…

Thailand’s rural area offers visitors an innovative cultural experience. The area has eating customers and other customs, which when you visit you are obligated to abide by their customary rules.

While most people have their own habits, when visiting Thailand it is appropriate to adapt your eating habits, conforming to Thailand arrangement. Think of it as company visiting your home. If you are serving dinner, the visitors will eat what you serve.

One of the gravest problems in the US is that many step on others customs and beliefs, which leads to ongoing issues unresolved. Unlike America, Thailand adheres to their customers and beliefs, thus going into the country with intentions of adhering to your own customs and belief is not accepted. While punishment will not become of it, you will be looked down upon.

Thailand residents dine, using the right hand. If you are left handed, sit on the left side of the table, until you become accustom to Thailand’s customs. Forks in Thailand, unlike other areas of the world use the forks to put the provisions on spoons. Thus, use your fork to load up your provisions and eat with your right hand.

If you select sticky rice from the menu, the spoon rule is out, since the provision is expected to be digested by use of the hands. Roll the rice into a ball if this makes matters easier for you. The rice can also be utilized as a spoon form, while eating other provisions. In Thailand, everyone eats from the same serving plates. Visitors to Thailand are not permitted to use their spoon, dishing provisions onto their own plate.

If you are, accustom to second servings in your country, be advised that Thailand considers second serving in their country is a form of impoliteness, especially if you have remains on your spoon that drops onto the serving dish. Thailand also expects visitors from other counties to clean the hands before joining dining arrangements, otherwise shower before dining.

It is always wise to research a bit before visiting the country to make sure you do not go against Thailand’s rules. It is all about respect, another of America’s pitfalls. Therefore, try to remember the day when respect was an item before visiting Thailand!

Your first trip to rural areas of Thailand can prove to be a whole new cultural experience. There are various customs you’ll be expected to conform to and a list of do’s and don’ts and one of them involves their eating customs.

Although you’ll undoubtedly have your own habits when it comes to eating, if you’re visiting parts of rural Thailand in particular, it’s appreciated if you can adapt to their style of eating. Thai’s only eat with the right hand, so if you’re used to using your left, you may need to sit on your left hand for a while, whilst you get used to it! What’s more, although forks are often found on the table with your meal, they’re not used for eating – only for putting food on the spoon. Instead, you’re expected to eat with the spoon in your right hand.

However, when you’re eating sticky rice, the spoon rule doesn’t, as it’s regarded as being a food that you eat by hand. To make things easier, squish the rice up into a ball and eat like that. You can also use the rice as a form of spoon, and eat other items of food from it.

Everyone shares the same serving plate and you’re expected to use your own spoon to dish food from it onto your plate. But be careful – if you’re going for seconds it’s deemed impolite if you still have remains of food on your spoon, and especially if any of it accidentally drops onto the serving plate!

I’ve always loved Thai food and whenever I go to a restaurant I tend to order some of the hotter Thai dishes available. So when on our recent visit to Thailand it was inevitable that the cuisine was going to be one of the highlights for me and while I knew some Thai food can be very, very hot I also knew that this wasn’t the case with all of their dishes and I also believed I would be able to handle it well enough.

The first thing that struck me when we tried the local cuisine for the first time was the friendliness that went hand in hand with the service. The Thai people are genuinely very friendly and we were made to feel welcome wherever we went. The waiters were more than happy to explain the dishes and warn us if they thought we were biting off more than we could chew.

The food was everything I had dreamt it would be and more. The smell alone when you walk past some of the restaurants and bars was enough to entice you in but these fantastic aromas weren’t just emitted from the eateries but also the homes. My wife joked that if she hadn’t have been there I would have been knocking on doors asking to try some of the food. She was right.
